What to check first, if your split-system isn’t working.
If your air conditioner does not appear to be heating or cooling effectively, this is most commonly caused by a dirty filter, incorrect settings, or the unit needing a reset rather than a mechanical fault. Please work through the following steps before a technician is called:
Settings Check — Ensure the unit is set to the correct mode for what you need. For cooling, the mode should be set to COOL (❄️) and for heating it should be set to HEAT. Make sure the temperature is set appropriately — for cooling, set the temperature lower than the current room temperature, and for heating, set it higher. Also check that the fan speed is not set to its lowest setting, as this can significantly reduce the unit’s effectiveness.
Clean the Filter — A blocked or dirty filter is one of the most common causes of poor performance and is the renter’s responsibility to maintain. To clean the filter, switch the unit off, open the front panel of the indoor unit (this usually lifts or clips open), and carefully slide out the filter. Gently vacuum the filter or rinse it under lukewarm water, allow it to dry completely, and then reinsert it before closing the panel. We recommend cleaning the filter every four to six weeks during periods of heavy use.
Reset the Condenser Unit — If the above steps do not resolve the issue, try resetting the system at the outdoor condenser unit. Locate the isolator switch on the wall beside the outdoor unit, switch it off, and wait a full 10 minutes before switching it back on. Then restart the indoor unit using the remote or wall controller. This reset can resolve a number of minor faults and is always worth trying before a technician is called.
If the unit is still not performing correctly after completing all of the above steps, please contact our office with details of the issue, including the make and model of the unit if possible, and we will arrange for a qualified technician to inspect it.
